Frequently Asked Questions

Spray Foam Insulation Questions

What is the highest R-value for spray foam insulation?

Closed-cell foam, at about R-5 to R-7 per inch according to HomeGuide. Open-cell is about R-3.5 to R-3.7 per inch. That is why closed-cell is used in shallow spaces like rowhome roof cavities.

Can you spray foam inside existing walls?

Injection foams exist, but in older Reading walls we usually dense-pack cellulose through small holes instead. It costs less, fills around old framing and lets the wall dry. Open walls during a remodel are where spray foam fits best.

Does spray foam insulation stop mold?

Foam that keeps warm, damp air off cold surfaces reduces condensation, which is what feeds mold. It does not fix leaks or remove existing mold, so leaks get fixed and mold gets cleaned first.

Who manufactures spray foam insulation?

Several large chemical and building-product companies make spray foam systems. What matters more is that the installer uses the right foam for each spot, at the right thickness, and lets it cure properly.

How do you insulate a rowhome with a flat roof?

Usually by reaching the shallow cavity between the top-floor ceiling and the roof deck, through the ceiling, the roof edge or during a roof replacement, and filling it with closed-cell foam or dense-packed cellulose. We look first and explain the options.

What R-value should a Reading attic have?

PHRC lists R-49 ceilings for Pennsylvania's Central zone, which includes Berks County, and the Department of Energy recommends R-60 for an uninsulated Zone 5 attic. Rowhome roof cavities often cannot reach those numbers, so we get as close as the space allows.

Spray Foam Insulation Questions

Can spray foam go in a flat roof cavity?

Yes, closed-cell foam against the roof deck is one of the best options for shallow flat-roof spaces. Access is planned case by case.

Is closed-cell or open-cell better for a stone basement?

Closed-cell on the sill, rim and dry upper wall.

How long should I stay out after spraying?

HomeGuide advises 24 hours or more. We confirm for your job.

Does spray foam bother the neighbors in a rowhome?

We keep the work area closed off and ventilated to the outside.

Rowhome Roof & Attic Insulation Questions

Why is my rowhome's third floor so hot?

The flat roof above it usually has little or no insulation, and summer sun heats the roof deck.

Can you insulate a flat roof without replacing it?

Often, yes, through the ceiling or roof edge. A roof replacement makes it easier.

What R-value can a shallow cavity reach?

It depends on depth. Closed-cell foam gets the most R-value per inch.

How long does it take?

Usually a day or two.

Basement & Foundation Insulation Questions

Can you foam a fieldstone basement?

The sill, rim and dry upper wall. Lower stone often needs to dry.

Will foaming the sill warm my floors?

Usually noticeably.

Can you insulate a basement that flooded?

After it is dry and the water source is handled.

How long does it take?

Usually a day, less for a rowhome.

Can you seal an old coal chute or basement window?

We seal around frames and openings. Broken or rotted windows need repair first.

Wall Insulation Questions

Can you insulate a brick rowhome wall?

Solid brick has no cavity to fill. We focus on sealing and on the roof and sill instead.

Can you insulate frame walls without removing plaster?

Yes, with dense-pack through small holes.

What about knob-and-tube?

Live knob-and-tube should be replaced or confirmed safe first.

How long does it take?

One to two days for most houses.

Why is my back kitchen so cold?

Rear additions on rowhomes were often built with little insulation. Dense-pack walls and filling the floor and roof usually fix it.

Can wall work be done in stages?

Yes, each wall or room is priced separately.

Pole Barn & Farm Building Insulation Questions

Will spray foam stop my pole barn from sweating?

Yes, closed-cell on the steel stops condensation.

Can you insulate an old wood barn?

Yes, with care for the structure and moisture.

Do I need a permit?

Rules vary by township, especially for heated or occupied buildings.

How long does it take?

One to three days depending on size.

Can you insulate a stone bank barn?

Usually by insulating a framed space inside it or the roof, so the stone can still dry.

Insulation Removal & Replacement Questions

What does vermiculite look like?

Pebbly, gray-brown or gold loose fill, sometimes shiny.

Do you remove asbestos?

No, a licensed abatement contractor does. We insulate after.

How long does removal take?

Usually a day.

Is removal always needed?

No, only for wet, soiled or unsafe insulation.

Do you remove everything or just the bad parts?

Where possible, just the wet or soiled areas. We explain on the quote.

Will removal make a mess?

The hose runs from outside, and we protect the path.
